Artist Spotlight: Melvin Smith

Hey Folks:

Welcome to another edition of Artist Spotlight; within the next few weeks this series will include talented musicians that work with B.O.N.E Entertainment.

Today I’m spotlighting saxophonist extraordinaire Mr. Melvin Smith.

Melvin Smith, “soulful sax man and well musically educated award winner” (Chris Spector-Midwest Record Review), is a native of Jacksonville, Florida who began playing saxophone at the age of thirteen. During his early musical development Smith was fortunate to have great musical experiences like performing at the Montreux Jazz Festival and a European tour. Smith attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music where he received an excellent education in music. Smith later received a Master’s Degree in Jazz Studies from Queens College in New York. During the late 90′s Smith was a part of ADMAS, a New York based groundbreaking Ethiopian Jazz group. During the same time Smith, became a member of The New York Jazz Group The New Hope Ensemble, and the acid jazz group Funk Monk. Since moving to New York Melvin has had the opportunity to play with such artists as Charlie Persip, Hubert Eaves III, Ben Vereen, MIchael Henderson, and Norman Connors. Smith has also had the pleasure of opening for Ce Ce WInans and Donnie McClurkin. Smith’s critically acclaimed 2007 release “Portrait” has been compared to Donald Byrd’s
A New Perspective ( Blue Note 1962) and I’m trying to get Home (Blue Note 1964) and Smith’s approach has been compared to Hank Mobley by Micheal Gladstone at All About Jazz. Smith has also been compared to Charles Lloyd and George Coleman (John Barron- All About Jazz). Portrait mixes different styles and feels for a great project. John Barron writes: “Portrait is an honest representation of an artist willing to take chances while respecting the musical traditions of his past. Smith has the potential to reach a broad audience without compromising an ounce of artistic integrity.”

On October 12, 2010 Melvin released his latest project Evidence now available on Amazon, iTunes, Rhapsody Music and everywhere music is sold.

Be sure to download Evidence, Portrait and I Surrender TODAY!

Until next time…

Old School Thursday – Line/Group Dances

Hey Folks:

I’m on a dance kick and want to feature 5 of my all time favorite line and group dances.

According to Wikipedia

A line dance is choreographed dance with a repeated sequence of steps in which a group of people dance in one or more lines or rows without regard for the gender of the individuals, all facing the same direction, and executing the steps at the same time. Line dancers are not in physical contact with each other. Older “line dances” have lines in which the dancers face each other, or the “line” is a circle, or all dancers in the “line” follow a leader around the dance floor; while holding the hand of the dancers beside them.

These are not all old school but pretty fun to do at your New Years Eve party tomorrow!

2010 Dance Revolution

What up people!!!!????

I know… it’s been FOREVER since I’ve sent posted anything to this blog and I do apologize! Life has totally gotten in the way of my creative juices flowing!

But…

SHE’S BACK and I have so much to share with you. First I want to pay tribute to all the creative folks out there who come up with some of the most popular dances of 2010. I’ve selected the 5 below because they have all energized a whole generation  to Dance, Dance, DANCE!!!! There was a point in R&B and Hip Hop culture that everyone had back up dances, groups were doing their dance steps and artists had to be able to cut a rug. Then dancing became uncool. Not sure exactly when that happened but it’s like dancers dropped off the face of the Earth and became stagnate. I’m sure they all had moves that they wanted to bust but… alas no one wanted to see them.

Then Usher, Beyonce, Neo, Keri Hilson and Chris Brown bought back the popularity of the art of dances and it’s now hit an all time high! Today I want to share my favorite videos to watch… these kids are doing IT!

Old School Thursday: Gosepl Music

Hey Folks:

Welcome to another edition of Old School Thursday.

Earlier this month we lost another Gospel Music great Bishop Walter Hawkins!

Bishop Hawkins passed away on July 11th after a bout with pancreatic cancer. Hawkins career included singing with his brother’s in the Northern California State Youth Choir, later he formed a group with his brother Edwin and founded The Edwin Hawkins Singer. Through this group Hawkins became world known with their hit song “Oh Happy Day”.  In the early 1970s Hawkins left the group and became the Pastor of Love Center Church in Oakland, CA which he founded. There he started a Choir which received lots of love with well over a million copies sold from the 70s until the 90s in their  “Love Alive”  series! Bishop Hawkins also produced and collaborated on over 100 hit songs including recording with Diahanna Carroll, Sylvester and Jeffrey Osborne.

In honor of Bishop Hawkins I’d like to feature five of my old time fav old school Gospel tunes. Read the rest of this entry »

New Music Tuesday: Rebirth Brass Band

Hey Folks:

It’s Tuesday and I feel the need to share some ‘new’ music with you. In actuality the music I’ll be sharing here isn’t new as in newly released music but I’m hoping  it will be a new type of music. A genre or artist that you’ve never heard of that I believe you the B.O.N.E. Chronicles reader might find interesting.

Today’s new music is from the Rebirth Brass Bandwhich consists of 9 members; 2 drummers (Keith Frazier & Derrick Tabb), 2 trumpet players (Derrick Shezbie & Glen Andrews), 2 trombone players (Corey Henry & Stafford Agee), 2 Saxophone players (Vincent Broussard & Byron (Flee) Bernard and a Tuba player (Phil Fraizer) who is the band leader.

The Rebirth Brass Band is a New Orleans band that began in 1982 founded by brothers Philip & Keith Frazier and Kermit Ruffins. The band was comprised of friends from their H.S. marching band in the Treme neighborhood of NOLA. Rebirth was discovered at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival they same year they formed and went on to record their first studio album in 1984. Rebirth is known for combining traditional New Orleans brass band music with funk, jazz, soul and hip hop influences. Rebirth’s discography includes 14 albums between 1984 and 2008.

Check out this video and become a Rebirth fan just like me!

Until next time…
